Oakland

Nicknamed “San Francisco’s Brooklyn”, Oakland is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. It’s a great place to live as well as to visit. From boating and bird watching on the city’s Lake Merritt to sampling an array of food as you stroll down the streets of Oakland’s hip Temescal neighborhood, you’ll always find something to do. Oakland is home to a thriving arts and music scene, a plethora of artisanal restaurants to tempt every palate, Victorian architecture in Old Town, and a rich and varied nightlife. The NFL’s Raiders, NBA’s Golden State Warriors, and the MLB’s A’s make Oakland a great city for sports fans.

Oakland has a rich history. After the Civil War, Oakland was chosen to be the western terminal of the Transcontinental Railroad and went on to become one of the most important West Coast ports in the country. In the 1970’s Oakland was the center for political activism and the fight against social inequality. The Black Panther Party got it start at Oakland’s Merritt College. In recent years, the city has earned the title as “America’s Most Exciting City” (2013) and placed in the top 5 of “America’s Most Hipster Cities”.
